Note ⊕Example dedications to adapt as your own — a dedication is personal, so treat these as a starting point. Star the ones you like and they stay in your shortlist.

    About this tool

The dedication is the shortest, most personal page in your book — and often the hardest to start. This free book dedication generator gives you example dedications for every relationship, from parents and partners to children, friends and those no longer with us. Pick who the book is for, optionally weave in a name, and shuffle through ideas until one feels right.

These are starting points to adapt, not lines to copy — a good book dedication sounds like you. Star the ones you like and your shortlist is saved in your browser. For where the dedication page goes and how to write one, see our guide to book dedication examples; when the rest of your front matter needs sorting, the copyright page generator is next door.

    • Keep it to a line or two — a dedication is a gesture, not a speech.
    • Save the long thank-yous for the acknowledgements at the back.
    • Read it aloud; the best dedications sound like something you would actually say.
    • If in doubt, sincere beats clever.

      Add a name (optional)

Type a name to weave into the examples that use one — "For Sarah, who read every draft" — or leave it blank for a general version.

      Shuffle and shortlist

Shuffle for more examples, star the ones that resonate, and adapt your favourite into something that is truly yours.

    FAQ

    Common questions

    What is a book dedication?
A dedication is a short, personal message near the front of a book, offering it to a particular person or group — usually someone who matters to the author. It is distinct from the acknowledgements, which thank the many people who helped make the book; a dedication is a single, heartfelt gesture.
How do you write a book dedication?
Keep it short and sincere. Name the person or people the book is for and, if you like, add a line about why. It can be tender, funny or plain — what matters is that it sounds like you. Use the examples above as a springboard, then make the wording your own.
Where does the dedication page go in a book?
On its own page in the front matter, after the title and copyright pages and before the table of contents. It usually sits alone on a right-hand page, with plenty of white space around a line or two of text.
What is the difference between a dedication and acknowledgements?
A dedication is a brief, personal offering of the whole book to someone, placed at the front. Acknowledgements are a longer thank-you to everyone who contributed — editors, beta readers, family — and usually sit at the back. Many books have both.
Can I dedicate my book to more than one person?
Yes. Plenty of dedications name several people, a whole family, or a group such as 'my readers'. Keep it readable — a dedication to a long list loses its impact, so group people naturally where you can.
