Words to pages: the quick answers

Every figure below comes from the same engine as the calculator. Book pages are quoted at Demy (135 × 216) on 11pt type with default (1.5) spacing — set those three in the calculator above and it will reproduce this column exactly. A typeset book page and a double-spaced manuscript page land close together at roughly 250 to 262 words each; single-spacing fits about twice as much.

About this tool

How long will your book actually be in print? This free words to pages calculator estimates your printed page count from your word count, trim size, font size and line spacing, so you can plan your book before the manuscript is even finished. It turns an abstract word count into a real page count, which is what determines your spine, your printing cost and your reader's first impression.

The same manuscript can run to very different lengths depending on format and typesetting. A larger page, smaller font or tighter spacing fits more words per page; a generous, readable layout uses more pages. Use this word count to page count tool to answer how many pages is x words for your chosen format, then feed the figure into our printing and spine calculators to plan cost and design.

If you just want the number for a common word count, the reference table under the calculator has it worked out already — from 500 words up to 150,000, in printed book pages, double-spaced manuscript pages and single-spaced document pages side by side.

Not sure what word count to aim for in the first place? Our guides to how many words in a novel and average book length set out the norms genre by genre, and how long is a chapter explains how chapter breaks quietly add to the printed extent. Pages have a time cost too: our reading speed test uses the same words-per-page model to work out how many hours your extent asks of a reader.

  • Pick your real trim size early; it changes the page count a lot.
  • Add a few pages for front matter, chapter openers and blanks.
  • Feed the result into the spine and printing calculators to plan cost.

FAQ

Common questions

How many pages is a given word count?
A typeset paperback page holds roughly 262 words, a double-spaced manuscript page 250, and a single-spaced document page about 500. So 2,000 words is around 7.6 book pages, 8 double-spaced or 4 single-spaced. The reference table above lists every common count from 500 to 150,000 words; the calculator tailors it to your exact trim size and type.
How many pages is 1,000 words?
About 3.8 pages in a typeset book, 4 pages double-spaced, or 2 pages single-spaced in a normal 12pt document. Short-form writing is where the difference between formats bites hardest in percentage terms — the same 1,000 words fills twice as much paper double-spaced as single.
How many pages is 2,000 words?
Roughly 7.6 pages of typeset book, 8 pages double-spaced, or 4 pages single-spaced. Two thousand words is also about the length of a short chapter — most novel chapters run 1,500 to 5,000 words, which is why chapter counts and page counts track each other so closely.
How many pages is 50,000 words?
Around 191 printed pages at a typical paperback setting, or 200 pages double-spaced as a manuscript. Fifty thousand words is NaNoWriMo's target and the bottom end of novel length — a real but slim book, and thin enough that spine width starts to constrain your cover design.
How many words is a page?
Around 262 words on a typeset paperback page, 250 on a double-spaced manuscript page, and roughly 500 single-spaced. The book figure moves with trim size and type: a large page in small type can carry over 400 words, a generously set small paperback under 200.
How do I convert pages to words?
Multiply the page count by the words on a page for that format — about 262 for a typical paperback. Switch the calculator to "Pages → words" and it does it for you, which is the quick way to size a published book you are using as a comparison title, or to work backwards from a target extent to the word count you need to write.
How do I estimate my book's page count?
Take your word count and divide by the words that fit on a page in your chosen format, which depends on trim size, font size and line spacing. This calculator does that for you. It is the simplest way to predict extent before you typeset, so you can plan cost and design early.
Why does page count matter for printing?
Page count drives both your spine width and your printing cost, since every page adds paper and printing. Knowing your likely extent early lets you budget accurately and design a spine that fits. Once you have an estimate here, our Book Printing Cost Calculator turns it into a realistic cost figure.
Does font size really change the page count?
Yes, considerably. A larger font and looser line spacing make your book more readable but use more pages, while smaller, tighter type fits more words per page. These choices affect cost and feel. Try a few combinations in the calculator to balance readability against extent and budget.
Is this estimate accurate enough to plan with?
It is a reliable planning estimate, not a final figure. Your true page count depends on your exact typesetting, chapter breaks, images and front matter. Use it to budget and choose a format with confidence, then confirm the final extent once your book is properly laid out before printing.
