What is a book dedication?
A dedication is a short, personal message that offers the book to someone — a person, a few people, or a group such as your readers. It sits near the front of the book and speaks in the author's own voice, which is what gives even a one-line dedication its weight.
It is not the same as the acknowledgements. A dedication is a single, heartfelt gesture; the acknowledgements are a longer thank-you to the many people who helped the book exist. Plenty of books carry both, in different places.
How to write a book dedication
Keep it short and sincere. Name the person or people the book is for, and, if you want, add a few words about why — "who taught me to read", "who never stopped believing". The tone is yours to choose: tender, plain, or quietly funny all work, as long as it sounds like you rather than a greetings card.
If you are stuck, start from an example and rewrite it in your own words. A dedication you have adapted to fit a real person will always beat a borrowed line, however elegant.
Where the dedication page goes
The dedication sits in the front matter, after the title and copyright pages and before the table of contents. It has a page to itself, usually a right-hand page, with the text set high and surrounded by white space — the blank room around it is part of the effect.
Front-matter pages like this are counted in the sequence but rarely show a visible page number, and the dedication carries no heading. It is simply there, waiting, as the reader turns past it into the book.
Examples by relationship
Some of the most common dedications are to parents ("For Mum and Dad, who filled the house with books"), to a partner ("For the one who read every draft and loved me anyway"), or to children ("For Sophie — may you always chase impossible things"). In-memory dedications are among the most moving: "In loving memory of James, who is on every page."

Dedication vs acknowledgements
It is worth knowing the difference, because they do different jobs. A dedication offers the whole book to someone in a line or two at the front. Acknowledgements are a longer, warmer list of thanks — to editors, beta readers, your family, perhaps your agent — and usually sit at the back of the book.

Common questions
- How long should a book dedication be?
- Short — usually a single line, occasionally two or three. The power of a dedication is in its brevity; a whole paragraph starts to read like acknowledgements. If you have a lot to say, save it for the thank-yous at the back.
- Do I have to dedicate my book to someone?
- No. A dedication is entirely optional. Many books have one because it is a lovely tradition and costs a single page, but plenty of books skip it. If no one springs to mind, it is perfectly fine to leave it out.
- Can I dedicate a book to someone who has died?
- Yes, and many of the most moving dedications are in memory of someone. A simple 'In loving memory of…' followed by the name, and perhaps a few words or dates, is a fitting and common form.
- Is a book dedication the same as an epigraph?
- No. A dedication offers the book to a person; an epigraph is a short quotation — from another writer, a song, or the author — set at the start to hint at the book's theme. A book can have both, on separate pages.
- Should the dedication page have a page number?
- Usually not. Front-matter pages like the dedication either carry lower-case roman numerals or, more often, no visible number at all, even though they are counted in the sequence. The dedication typically sits alone with no header or number.
