Common questions
- Is a copyright page required in a book?
- It is not legally required — your copyright exists automatically the moment you write the work — but every professionally produced book has one. It signals the book is a proper edition, states who owns the rights, and gives retailers, libraries and readers the key facts. Leaving it out makes a book look unfinished.
- Do I need to register my copyright?
- No. In the UK and most countries, copyright is automatic and free the moment your work is fixed in a tangible form. There is no copyright register in the UK; some US authors register with the Copyright Office for extra legal remedies, but it is never required to hold or state your copyright.
- What should a copyright page include?
- At minimum: the copyright notice (© symbol, year and author), a rights statement such as All rights reserved, and — for novels — a fiction disclaimer. Most also add the ISBN, edition, publisher or imprint, and often a printer's number line. The generator above assembles all of these from your inputs.
- What is the number line on a copyright page?
- The row of numbers like 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 is the printer's key. Traditionally the lowest number present indicates the printing, so it shows which print run a copy came from. It is optional for self-published and print-on-demand books, so toggle it on or off to taste.
- Do ebooks and children's books need a copyright page too?
- Yes. An ebook carries the same copyright page as the print edition, usually with its own ISBN. A children's book is no different — it needs the notice, the rights statement and, if it is a story, the fiction disclaimer, all of which this generator produces.
