How long should a children's book be?

Children's books fall into a handful of age bands, each with its own expected length. Board books, for ages 0 to 3, run to a handful of words a page and often under 100 words in total. Picture books, for roughly 3 to 7, typically sit around 500 words and rarely exceed 1,000. Early readers, for about 5 to 8, use simple, controlled vocabulary and run somewhere between 1,500 and 3,000 words.

From there the books get longer. Chapter books, for ages 7 to 10, usually run from about 5,000 to 15,000 words across short chapters. Middle grade, for 8 to 12, is full-length fiction of roughly 20,000 to 55,000 words. These bands are conventions rather than hard rules, but agents, publishers and booksellers all expect them, so a manuscript that sits far outside its band is a harder sell.

A picture book's page count is decided by the printing press, not the author. Books are printed on large sheets that are folded and trimmed into sections, so the total has to be a multiple of four — and, for the folding maths to work cleanly, picture books settle almost universally on 32 pages.

That is why word count and page count are separate questions here. Whether your text is 200 words or 800, the book is still 32 pages; a shorter text simply gives the illustrations more room. Plan those pages spread by spread with the picture book planner rather than trying to hit a page count with words.

For chapter books and middle grade, the relationship flips: there are few or no illustrations, so the number of words really does determine the number of pages. A 10,000-word chapter book and a 40,000-word middle-grade novel are different sizes of book, and they print accordingly.

Length problems usually point to a mismatch with the age group rather than a fault in the writing. A picture book creeping past 1,000 words is often really an early reader; a middle-grade novel that stalls at 12,000 words may be a long chapter book.
