- Around 500 is the sweet spot, and 1,000 is a sensible ceiling — many modern picture books come in under 600 words. Because the format is a fixed 32 pages, a shorter text simply leaves more room for the illustrations to breathe.
- What word count makes a chapter book?
- Chapter books for roughly ages 7 to 10 typically run from about 5,000 to 15,000 words, split into short chapters. Below that you are likely looking at an early reader; above it, at middle grade.
- How many words is a middle-grade book?
- Middle grade, aimed at about 8 to 12 year olds, usually runs between 20,000 and 55,000 words. Fantasy and adventure sit at the higher end; contemporary stories are often shorter.
- Does word count decide the number of pages?
- For older children's books, yes — more words means more pages. But for board books and picture books the page count is fixed by print production, so a picture book is 32 pages almost regardless of how many words it contains.
